The Gandhis

Dublin popsters, The Gandhis, released their debut album ‘You Are My Friend’ through 1969 Records in October 2009. Having already designed covers for the band's previous 2 singles, Emagine Media were commissioned to design the artwork for the album.

After several "brainstorming" sessions with the band a cover concept was agreed. A play on the title track, the front cover image shows two friends sharing a moment in the thick of battle. The real challenge for Emagine's design team was to create an authentic WWI battle scene. Uniforms were sourced by the band and vintage replica weapons were hired from Theatrical Arms & FX in Dublin.

The photos used throughout the digipak and booklet were all shot on location in Duncannon Fort and Heritage Centre, Co Wexford. The old fortifications provided and an excellent backdrop for the images and helped create a genuine first world war scene.

Explosions and barbed wire were added to the front cover image in photoshop. The booklet, inspired by army ration booklets of the time, features medals, shell casings and other memorabilia loaned to the band by family members who had actually fought in the Great War.

Emagine Media would like to thank Marian Coady, manager at Duncannon Fort and Heritage Centre and John McKenna, Theatrical Arms & FX.
