Emperor Diocletian was the only Roman Emperor ever to retire from his position. All the others were killed in battle or assassinated in office.

What is Diocletian's legacy? How is he remembered?

Living in Split, Croatia for 15 years, Declan O'Rourke and his partner Tomo Taras, who is a local of Spilt, were well aware of the Emperor's influence on their city. With over 100,000 visitors a month, Split attracts all nationalities to the Adriatic Sea.

The site of the Emperor's preserved palace contains the old town of Split and is the hub of civic life in the city. Among the guides leading throngs of people, Declan and Tomo wanted a story that stood out. How do you entertainingly explain a rich history?

From Croatia, they learned about an Irish company that uses virtual reality to do just that. This led them to Declan's home town of Waterford where an award-winning VR experience had been running for years. King of The Vikings and the company who made it drew their attention.

In 2019, Palace Productions commissioned Emagine to bring Diocletian's 2000-year-old story back to life. And as it is said, the rest is history.

With eyes fixed on the Adriatic Sea, many have looked at Diocletian's Palace and wondered what is behind the facades.
