Reconstructing maritime history through immersive virtual reality, where lost ships and seafaring heritage become living visitor experiences.
Maritime museums often face challenges interpreting lost vessels and underwater heritage where physical remains are limited and complex stories are difficult to communicate through traditional displays. Donegal County Council sought a more immersive way to connect visitors with the maritime history of the Spanish Armada and the shipwreck heritage of Donegal.
Emagine developed Wrath of the Atlantic, an immersive virtual reality experience designed to transform maritime history into participatory interpretation. Combining historical storytelling, digital reconstruction, and stylised immersive visuals, the project allows visitors to engage with a defining moment in seafaring history through experience rather than observation.
The experience combines a 7-minute VR journey centred on La Trinidad de Valencera with a research-led digital reconstruction of the Saldhana, creating both dramatic storytelling and historical interpretation. Designed for museum deployment, the project supports public engagement, education, and cultural tourism within a scalable immersive format.
The project established a model for immersive maritime heritage interpretation, showing how virtual reality can help museums present lost ships, naval history, and underwater heritage through digital reconstruction and visitor participation.
