Using interactive museum technology, holography, and AI to transform collections into immersive visitor interpretation

Specialist museums often face challenges interpreting intricate collections in ways that engage modern audiences while preserving scholarly depth. The Irish Museum of Time sought a more immersive and interactive way to present horological history, craftsmanship, and the stories behind its collection.

Emagine developed an integrated interpretation system combining holography, interactive touchscreen technology, IoT-driven exhibit elements, and AI guidance. The aim was to move beyond static display interpretation and create a more participatory museum experience centred on exploration and discovery.

The project combined a holographic watch repair environment, 3D presentation of rare timepieces, interactive map-based storytelling, and an AI museum guide to create layered visitor engagement across the museum journey. Rather than a single digital installation, the project was designed as an interconnected interpretation ecosystem supporting both storytelling and collections access.

The project established a model for how interactive museum technology can support collections interpretation, improve visitor engagement, and help specialist museums present complex subjects through immersive and accessible experiences.

Q: What is interactive museum technology for collections interpretation?
A: Interactive museum technology uses digital tools such as touch interfaces, holography, AI guidance, and connected exhibit systems to help museums interpret collections in more engaging and accessible ways. It supports deeper visitor understanding while preserving scholarly content.

Q: How can holography support museum interpretation?
A: Holography helps museums present stories, environments, and objects in ways traditional display methods often cannot. It can add spatial storytelling, demonstrate craftsmanship, and help bring historical contexts to life through immersive interpretation.

Q: How can AI improve museum visitor experiences?
A: AI can support museum visitor experiences through guided interpretation, responsive information access, multilingual interaction, and personalised engagement. It helps museums create more dynamic and accessible visitor journeys.
