Reconstructing archaeological heritage through immersive virtual reality, where visitors enter history rather than observe its remains.

Archaeological sites often face challenges helping visitors understand places that survive today only in fragments or altered forms. Palace Productions sought a more immersive way to interpret Diocletian’s Palace, enabling visitors to understand the site as a living environment rather than as ruins alone.

Emagine developed an immersive virtual reality experience that reconstructs Diocletian’s Palace in 380 AD, combining historical research, motion capture, multilingual storytelling, and digital reconstruction. The aim was to transform archaeological interpretation into a participatory visitor experience rooted in authenticity and education.

The project combined collaboration with local conservators, detailed historical reconstruction, lifelike character performance through motion capture, and supporting digital systems for visitor management. Rather than presenting isolated historical facts, the experience was designed as a complete model of immersive historical interpretation for cultural tourism and heritage audiences.

The project established a model for how immersive virtual reality can support archaeological interpretation, deepen visitor engagement, and help heritage sites present complex history through reconstruction, participation, and storytelling.

Q: What is virtual reality for archaeological interpretation?
A: Virtual reality for archaeological interpretation uses digital reconstruction, immersive storytelling, and interactive environments to help visitors understand historic sites as they once existed. It allows heritage organisations to interpret ruins, lost architecture, and historical context in ways traditional displays often cannot.

Q: How can virtual reality support archaeological and heritage sites?
A: Virtual reality helps archaeological and heritage sites reconstruct lost environments, improve visitor understanding, and present complex history through participation rather than passive observation. It also supports cultural tourism, education, and premium visitor experiences.

Q: What are the benefits of immersive historical reconstruction in museums and heritage attractions?
A: Immersive historical reconstruction helps visitors engage emotionally and spatially with the past, improves interpretation of difficult subjects, and gives institutions new ways to present history, archaeology, and cultural narratives beyond static displays.
