Bringing national origin stories to life through cinematic virtual reality designed for heritage tourism and immersive interpretation.

Heritage attractions often face challenges presenting foundational national history in ways that engage modern audiences while balancing scholarship, emotion, and visitor appeal. Viking House sought a more immersive way to present the story of Harald Fairhair and the unification of Norway through a premium visitor experience.

Emagine developed The First King, a cinematic virtual reality experience combining motion capture, multilingual narration, and immersive storytelling to transform a foundational historical narrative into a visitor attraction designed for cultural tourism. The aim was to move beyond conventional interpretation and create a story-led immersive experience.

Set within a replica Viking longhouse, the experience combines a 15-minute cinematic VR journey with a companion tablet app offering maps, character biographies, and language support. Rather than treating VR as a standalone layer, the project was designed as an integrated interpretation system combining physical setting, immersive media, and visitor support tools.

The project established a model for how cinematic virtual reality can support cultural tourism, deepen engagement with historical storytelling, and help heritage attractions present complex narratives through immersive visitor experience.
