Using shared virtual reality to turn complex history into immersive, participatory learning.

Step Into Sarajevo on the Eve of a Crisis

Sarajevo VRX Museum sought a new way to interpret one of history’s defining moments beyond static displays and conventional media. The goal was to create an immersive visitor attraction that would engage audiences emotionally, support learning, and help visitors understand the wider significance of events that shaped the twentieth century.

Emagine developed a multi-user virtual reality experience that reconstructs Sarajevo in 1914 and places groups inside a shared historical environment. Combining immersive storytelling, historical research, and synchronized group participation, the project transformed a complex historical event into a social and educational experience.

The experience combined detailed 3D reconstruction, multilingual narration, and a central group control system to support repeatable public operation. Visitors move together through the streets, follow the route of the Archduke’s carriage, and experience a guided form of digital historical interpretation designed for museums and education.

The project established a scalable model for immersive historical interpretation, helping demonstrate how shared virtual reality can support museums, educators, and cultural destinations in presenting complex history through participation rather than passive observation.
